The village lies among the North Downs between Caterham and Reigate, its elevated position giving it a more exposed, hillside setting than towns lower in the valley.

The parish church of St Peter and St Paul, a Grade I listed building begun before 1086, houses a large wall painting dating from around 1200, one of the more significant survivals of its kind in the country.
